Labor Day weekend tour

Not sitting around all weekend long. Had picked up a brochure last weekend to another great historical place on the eastern shore. Last year we went to George Washington’s birthplace not knowing Robert E Lee’s birthplace was a few miles down the road. Stratford Hall was much larger than we expected and had a terrific tour!

Although he wasn’t raised there his family was prominent. In fact George Washington was invited to his parents wedding there. He did not attend but sent 2 huge barrels of their favorite Madeira wine from Europe!!

It was built by his uncles who were the only brothers to sign the Declaration of Independence

There are a few original items like this wedding chest.

It was a rare construction in that it was all built at one time and not added onto in sections. Of course restoration work but look at these floors And oil cloth coverings.

Interesting potty–>

Period furniture:

The grounds were still huge – 1900 acres from original 6000.

Bordering the Potomac River , it was a stopping port in 1700s till a hurricane wiped out the port. Grist mill remained. Located by the most incredible cliffs!

And the best little beach !

Then off to wine tasting at Ingleside Vineyards. Largest winery on the Eastern Shore.

Of course we bought wine! A great day!
